Kolab Systems is proud to announce the Kolab Server 2.4 release, the first natively packaged community release for the Kolab Server. This release includes the new web client, the new web admin interface from the ongoing Kolab 3.0 series, ActiveSync through Z-Push and many of the other improvements Kolab Systems has made over the past year. With this release they become broadly available without the need to wait a couple more months for the Kolab 3.0 release.
“This release also marks the transition towards a release early, release often type of release engineering on the road to Kolab 3.0,” explains Kolab Systems Architect Jeroen van Meeuwen. “While we have tested this code base as much as we could and are running it on multiple systems ourselves, it marks a clear departure from the old, more monolithic code base and packages. This will have brought some changes that may affect users in unforeseen ways. We invite everyone to upgrade and report issues, as well as help to resolve them.“
“When we started a little more than two years ago, we announced that we would be moving more towards a model like that of Fedora vs RHEL, where technology can evolve more rapidly and freely while maintaining a stable branch for productive purposes for enterprise requirements,” explains Kolab Systems CEO Georg Greve. “Alongside the changes we made to the community process which allow any member of the community to help shape the way in which the technology evolves, this is probably the most important step of getting the development process back on track.”
If you want to set up a test server, just follow the quick installation howto, if you want to make use of the configuration options, please look at the full documentation. This is the first server to be available as native packages only, starting from our reference platform, Enterprise Linux 6. Community efforts to also package for Debian are ongoing, and we invite packagers from all distributions to get in touch, Kolab Systems will gladly provide help to get the Kolab Server packaged for as many distributions as possible.
Developers who wish to get involved in the ongoing Kolab 3.0 development cycle are encourage to do so on the basis of this Kolab Server 2.4 release, and get in touch for the advances on its basis.
