The Thunderbird Add-on SyncKolab was released in a new major version. The code was re-factored improving speed and stability, allowing for very large data sets of thousands of entries. Furthermore, the configuration options were improved significantly allowing for multiple configuration setups per account and synchronization type.

SyncKolab version 2 is now also available via the Mozilla Add-On Directory and works with recent versions of Thunderbird. Combined with the Lightning calendar add-on SyncKolab turns Mozilla Thunderbird into a capable Groupware client. It is released as Free Software under the Mozilla Public License version 1.1 and based on Open Standards for full interoperability.

Initially a personal fun project of Niko Berger, his latest revision of SyncKolab has been developed under contract for Kolab Systems AG. Niko Berger has thus joined the ranks of the world's leading Kolab professionals whose competency is bundled through Kolab Systems. This establishes a professional support path for SyncKolab and using Mozilla Thunderbird & Lightning as a Kolab Groupware client.

"This is just the first major step in what we have set out to achieve," explains Niko Berger, the maintainer of SyncKolab. "Our roadmap still continues items such as auto-configuration and some other improvements in usability. Also we're still working around some limitations in the Mozilla core, such as lack of RFC 5464 support which we hope to be able to add to Mozilla in the future. All contributions to allow us to reach that goal more quickly are of course welcome."

Georg Greve, CEO of Kolab Systems says: "Adding a professional support option for Thunderbird/Lightning that can survive the pressure of real large-scale enterprise usage was an important step for us. I'm proud of the work that our team has achieved - just like I'm excited to see all the steps taken towards Kolab 3.0 which you can find on our mailing lists, blogs and web pages."

This latest improvement now makes it possible for professional users to collaborate and share data between users of Thunderbird, the Kolab Client based on KDE Kontact, the Kolab Web Client, Microsoft Outlook, or mobile clients connected through ActiveSync. Simultaneously, they can rest assured that all data is and will remain available through Open Standards as Kolab is Free & Open all the way down to its internal storage format, yet available with all levels of professional support users can expect.
